Explosion-Proof Equipment Supply & Installation

Qatar's Oil & Gas, LNG, and petrochemical sectors require the highest levels of protection for electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres. Bens Technologies supplies and installs a comprehensive range of explosion-proof (Ex) equipment, certified to ATEX and IECEx international standards, for Zone 0, Zone 1, and Zone 2 classified areas across Doha, Ras Laffan, Mesaieed, and offshore platforms. As an authorised BARTEC and R.Stahl distributor in Qatar, we provide world-class Ex equipment backed by in-country engineering expertise, commissioning support, and after-sales service all supported by our in-house Ex Quality Representative (ExQAR).

What Is Explosion-Proof Equipment?

Explosion-proof (Ex) equipment is electrical and electronic equipment specifically designed and certified to be safe for use in hazardous areas where flammable gases, vapours, mists, or combustible dusts are present. Rather than being immune to sparks, Ex equipment uses engineered protection concepts such as flameproof enclosures, increased safety, intrinsic safety, or pressurisation to prevent any internal fault from igniting the surrounding explosive atmosphere.

Why ATEX and IECEx Certification Matters in Qatar

In Qatar’s Oil & Gas sector, QatarEnergy, QAFCO, QAPCO, and their EPC contractors specify IECEx certification as the minimum standard for all hazardous area electrical equipment. ATEX (European directive) is also accepted for EU-sourced products. Equipment without valid certification cannot legally be installed in Zone 1 or Zone 2 areas and presents a serious liability risk during QCDD and third-party audits.

Ex Equipment Categories We Supply in Qatar

Bens Technologies supplies the complete range of explosion-proof electrical equipment required across Qatar’s industrial sector, including: Ex-d flameproof enclosures and junction boxes, Ex-e increased safety terminal boxes, explosion-proof LED and fluorescent luminaires, Ex control stations, push buttons and switches, Ex-certified cable glands and conduit fittings, Ex plugs, sockets and connectors, Ex audible/visual alarm devices and beacons, and explosion-proof motors and variable speed drives.

Ex Protection Concepts: Choosing the Right Type

Selecting the correct protection concept for each Zone classification, gas group, and temperature class is critical. Our ExQAR-qualified engineers match Ex-d (flameproof) for Zone 1 enclosures, Ex-e (increased safety) for terminal boxes and connection equipment, Ex-n (non-sparking) for Zone 2 locations, Ex-p (pressurisation) for complex instruments and analysers, and Ex-ia/ib (intrinsic safety) for field instrumentation in Zone 0 and Zone 1.

Installation & Commissioning to IEC 60079-14

Supply alone is not sufficient explosion-proof equipment must be correctly installed, terminated, and inspected before energisation. Bens Technologies provides full installation services carried out by qualified Ex electricians, working to IEC 60079-14 (Design, selection and erection of electrical installations). On completion, we carry out the initial inspection per IEC 60079-17 and hand over the Ex equipment register and as-installed documentation.

Frequently Asked Qestions

Is IECEx or ATEX required for hazardous area equipment in Qatar?
IECEx is the preferred standard for Qatar's Oil & Gas sector and is typically mandated in QatarEnergy and QAFCO procurement specifications. ATEX is accepted for European-sourced equipment. Both certifications are accepted by QCDD for local compliance. Bens Technologies can supply equipment certified to either or both schemes.
What is the difference between Zone 1 and Zone 2?
Zone 1 is where an explosive gas atmosphere is likely in normal operation. Zone 2 is where it is not likely, but may occur for short periods. Zone 0 is where it is present continuously. The zone determines the minimum protection concept required Zone 1 typically requires Ex-d or Ex-e, while Zone 2 can use Ex-n. Equipment certified for Zone 1 can always be used in Zone 2.
Do you supply explosion-proof equipment for dust hazardous areas?
Yes. We supply equipment certified for combustible dust zones (Zone 21 and Zone 22) per IEC 60079-31, applicable to cement, grain, pharmaceutical powder, and chemical industries in Qatar.
Can you retrofit existing installations with ATEX/IECEx certified equipment?
Yes. We assess non-compliant or uncertified installations, identify certified replacement equipment, and manage the full retrofit with minimal disruption to operations, including updating the Ex equipment register.
